Background
Disney’s Operation Metadata Store (OMS) was modernized with an AWS native architecture. The SaaS platform was replaced with a custom cloud-native solution. AWS managed and serverless services improved scalability and resilience. The modernization enhanced cost efficiency and integration with Disney’s data ecosystem.
Challenge
Limited customization of metadata workflows and third-party dependencies. High costs as platform usage scaled. Difficult integration with AWS analytics and governance services. Limited control over security, resilience, and scalability.
Strategy
Replaced the SaaS platform with a custom AWS-native solution. Used managed and serverless services for scalability and resilience. Reduced operational overhead and optimized costs. Enabled future flexibility while avoiding vendor lock-in.
Solution Overview
Enabled metadata search and analytics using Amazon OpenSearch and Athena. Managed data lineage using AWS Neptune. Built APIs with AppSync, Lambda, and ECS Fargate. Delivered frontend content through CloudFront and S3. Secured access using Amazon Cognito.
Resiliency
AWS-managed and serverless services provide automatic scaling, high availability, and fault tolerance. Multi-AZ resiliency reduces the need for custom failover mechanisms. Most services require minimal infrastructure management. Provisioned OpenSearch was selected for cost efficiency and predictable usage. A small, manually managed cluster meets current workload demands.
