"Hall on the Island" was originally set in 1723 as a gala entertainment pavilion on one of the Great Pond’s islands. In 1746-48 the original wooden pavilion was replaced by a stone hall designed by architect Chevakinskiy. Later on it was rebuilt first by architect Quarenghi, and then by architect Rastrelli.
Well hidden behind the trees, the pavilion harmonizes beautifully with the landscape ensemble of the park. Though the exterior of the pavilion is quite modest, the splendor of its interior is magnificent and can be compared with the Great Hall of the Catherine Palace. In the times of Catherine II the musicians used to play in the pavilion. From the Great Pond’s harbor special ferry leaves to the "Hall on the Island". It operates on Mo, We-Su from 11.30 till 18. |
