The Grotto, a domed pavilion on the north side of the Great Pond, was built by Rastrelli in 1749-1761. The elaborate Baroque exterior, decorated with sculptures of naiads, tritons, shells, seaweed and dolphins, is largely original. The interior incorporates 3 halls connected by arched arcades and decorated with molding ornaments designed by Rinaldi in 1780s.
Since 1780s the Grotto was also called Morning Hall. The large collection of sculptures and vases was originally exhibited here, as well as the famous statue of Voltaire made by sculptor Jean Antoine Houdon in 1781 (today the statue can be seen in the Hermitage museum). |
