The Agate Rooms as well as Cold Baths were designed by architect Cameron in 1780-1795 as part of the Roman bath complex (they are also called "the thermes of Cameron").
The name "Agate Rooms" derives from the stone facing used in the interior decoration. It’s a small pavilion with elegant colonnade and semicircular rotunda, located on the second floor. In the niches there are decorative figures made of dark bronze. Interiors of the Main room, as well as Jasper and Agate rooms, are decorated with marble, porphyry and different varieties of Ural and Altai jasper. Fan-shaped granite staircase leads to the first floor of the pavilion, where bathing rooms with pools known as Cold Baths were once located. Presently the Agate Rooms interiors are open for visitors (We- Su 11-17). In the Cold Baths the temporary exhibit "Male and Female in Ancient Times" is on display (Open Mo, We- Su 11-16:30). |
