VISA SERVICES FOR LOCAL CITIZENS TRAVELLING ABROAD (2 listings) File Created: 28-Jan-03
You need a visa to travel to Russia. Two good discussions on obtaining a visa are found in Lonely Planet: Russia Ukraine & Belarus and Business Survival Guide. If you are traveling with a travel agency or a tour, they will take care of this problem.

Now, however, there are many other ways to get a visa. Basically you need an "invitation" either from your host or some sort of host organization, institute, or official agency, stating that they will take all responsibility for your needs. You then send the invitation to the Russian Embassy along with three photos, a visa application, photocopy of your passport, the processing fee, and a stamped return envelope. Some organizations, for example the new Bed & Breakfast Association, will get a visa for you. There are also visa services that will help you get the "invitation" necessary for a visa if you are not traveling with a tour.

In the USA, The Russian Embassy in Washington and the Consulates in New York, San Francisco and Seattle have accelerated processing: five business day service is $20, four days $40, and same day (if you submit your application by 11:30 a.m.) is $120. A multiple entry visa for business purposes can be obtained under special circumstances and costs $120. This is a rather lengthy process. Note that as of July 1, 1996 a test for HIV antibodies is a requirement for visas for persons staying in The Russian Federation for three months or longer. This includes most multi-entry visas.
