BEREZKA SHOPS File Created: 28-Jan-03
"Beriozka shops" were a monopoly of hard currency shops run by a former state trade organization to sell Russian art, handicrafts, jewelry, vodka, cigarettes and a selection of other imported goods for hard currency. Currently, the few remaining "Beriozka" stores are independently owned and operated.

Some are now almost department stores, others more like variety stores. Almost all carry imported spirits, packaged foods, candy, & cigarettes. They are listed under the appropriate category.

By law, hard-currency shops no longer exist in St. Petersburg (except in the airport), even though prices are often quoted in dollars. Cash payment is only in rubles. Some establishments avoid this rule by accepting credit cards only. See SHOPPING.
