How to Get an Address: Use paid information service (Daily 8-22) for help in finding telephone numbers and addresses. To find a person's address in St. Petersburg or Leningradskaya Oblast, dial 061+your own phone number. Tell them a person's full name, date and place of birth, and they will give you an address within one hour.
How to Find an Address Location: It is recommended that you call the organization or host to get detailed directions on how to find their door (literally). Ask them if they have a sign or some other way of finding the front door. Even better, get written instructions in English and Russian.
Finding the Actual Door: The street number given in the text is the number of the whole building, called a "house" (dom). A house can cover a whole city block and may include several different separate buildings called "korpus" and may have several entrances (podezd). These entrances may be located not only on the street but also in courtyards. Thus, an address in Russian might read: dom 2, kor. 3, pod. 3, kv. 22 which means: house 2, building 3, entrance 3, apartment 22.
The street number of the house can also have a letter, for example: dom 51a. In such cases we give a transliteration - house 51b.
Offices are referred to in different ways depending on where they are located. In office buildings an office can be referred to as office (ofis) or apartment (kvartira). In hotels and business centers, they can also be referred to as "room" (komnata).
TYPNote: The door from the apartment building onto the street may be locked by a domofon - a special device which requires you to punch in a three-digit code to enter the building. Check before you go.
