Hours of Work: Offices and institutes usually open between 9 and 10 , take ½ - 1 hour off for lunch between 13 and 14 and end the work day about 18. Most are closed Saturdays and Sundays, although a few work Saturdays.
Most shops work Monday through Saturday, open around 10. Some close around 18, many stay open to 20 or 21. Food stores tend to be open from 8 to 20, often every day.
Lunch Break: Most state shops and many organizations close for one hour in the middle of the day for a lunch break. You might see a sign (Pereryv na obed) "pause for lunch" on the door. Most new shops, Univermag, Universam and Western organizations work without a lunch break
TYPNote: hours of operation are indicated by the European or military clock. Thus 22:00 is 10 PM. In our book the lunch and/or dinner break is indicated by the hours in parenthesis, e.g., 9-18 (13-14) means open from 9 AM to 6 PM, closed for lunch from 1 PM to 2 PM.
"Sanitarnyy Den": Many markets, museums, public institutions, and a few shops close one day per month in addition to their regular closing for "cleaning day" (sanitarnyy den). We indicate this "cleaning day" as "closed last Tuesday of the month" (closed last Tu). See MUSEUMS, MARKETS.
