A wide variety of imported household appliances are now available in St. Petersburg from authorized dealers who provide service and parts. Their simpler Russian-made counterparts are also effective and cost much less when available, especially toasters, coffee grinders, and electric tea kettles, refrigerators, space heaters and stoves. But they lack many of the convenience features.
Here we include shops that sell "white goods", namely large home appliances (bytovye tovary) such as washing machines, dryers, refrigerators, dishwashers, freezers, microwaves and stoves. Stoves, unless otherwise specified, refer to electric stoves.
Large appliances, called "white goods" such as refrigerators, stoves, freezers used to be sold primarily in special stores called Kholodilniki. Now there are dozens of stores selling both imported and domestic appliances, with imported dishwashers, washing machines and dryers being the dream of many overworked Russian housewives.
