TYPES OF FOOD STORES IN ST. PETERSBURG
Universam. These once sparse self-serve Soviet style supermarkets have rapidly modernized their facilities and improved their quality and selection of goods. Canned and packaged goods, juices, pots, tableware, soap, paper products, dry goods, as well as meat, bread, fruits and vegetables can be found here. If this trend continues, they will all become true supermarkets.
Gastronomes usually have meat, fish, conserves, cheese, coffee & tea, liquors & spirits, cereals, and semi-prepared foods, but not dry goods or fruits and vegetables, fresh dairy or fresh bakery goods.
Diet (Dieta) grocery stores are similar to a gastronome but also have special foods for diabetics and others on special diets.
Farmer's Markets (Rynok) have fresh vegetables, fruit, sausage, meat, cheese, honey, flowers, etc. See MARKETS (Farmer's Markets, Kolkhoz Markets). In summer, fruits, nuts & berries and vegetables are sold around metros.
Bakaley stores carry mostly food staples, such as cereals, rice, flour, macaroni, salt, pepper, tea, coffee, matches, ketchup, soda, condiments, but not meat, cheese, fruit, dairy, or vegetables.
Grocery stores are used here to indicate the better "food product" stores (Produkty) that have fresh vegetables, fruit, bread, meat, eggs, etc., as well as the more usual packaged foodstuffs, sugar and coffee.

Supermarkets: Several Western style supermarkets with large floor space (100-200 square meters) with a variety of foodstuffs, fresh meat, dairy products, paper goods, housewares, deli sections and shopping carts.
Language Note: Russian's often use the word "supermarket" to refer to a very large store selling a good selection of various products (but no food), akin to the French "supermarché."
Prices: Many food stores have been privatized and set their own prices. Only a few products such as bread, milk, and eggs are subsidized and regulated.
Hours: See HOURS, SHOPS, WORK. Many smaller food shops and bakeries are open on Sunday; some commercial food shops are open 24 hourse, see FOOD STORES - OPEN 24 HOURS.
Packaged Foods. Many of the small "food" shops just have packaged foods (often imported), such as coffee, tea, cereals, cookies, snacks, sliced meats and cheese, but very few staples or fresh foods. We have tried to identify these as FOOD STORES - PACKAGED FOODS & BEVERAGES.
