Ballroom dancing is popular in Russia and many "Houses of Culture" (Dvorets Kultury) offer specialized courses for 1, 3, 6 months or even a year. It's a great way to meet people and to learn Russian and dancing at the same time.
In Saint Petersburg there are three organizations dedicated to the support and promotion of professional ballroom dancing: The Saint Petersburg Association of Ballroom Dance, approximately thirty dancing clubs; the Professional Dancing Union of Saint Petersburg, the principal members of which are elite ballroom dancing instructors; and the Alliance of Athletic Dancing Clubs of the Leningrad Province, which attracts primarily provincial clubs. The Association of Ballroom Dance is considered the leading organization, and has organized many exciting inter-national competitions ("The Baltic Cup," "White Nights," "The Petersburg Ball"). The district clubs, which constitute the Association and are listed below, instruct children in the art of ballroom dancing. The clubs engage in contests and hold interclub meetings on a weekly basis.
