Russians love to give (and receive) gifts, so that souvenirs and gifts shops are popular with Russians and visitors alike. In the past, the traditional places for Russians to buy souvenirs were in shops called "gifts" (Podarki). Worth a visit, these stores carry everything from crystal & jewelry to toiletries. Favorite gifts for Russians are flowers, chocolate, wine and cognac, and crystal. In summer, dozens of souvenir tables are set up at the entrance to Peter and Paul Fortress and other tourist spots as well as along Nevskiy Prospekt opposite the Grand Hotel Europe. Fun, but not always a bargain.
