Univermags versus Torgovyy Dom: The Russian equivalent of a department store is called an "Univermag". The Russian word "Univermag" is a contraction of Universalnyy Magazin, which means "universal store." These resemble Western department stores and have departments for clothing, coats, shoes, kitchen supplies, housewares, art supplies, sporting goods, musical instruments, stationery, souvenirs, gifts, electronics, etc. Trade houses (torgovyy dom) sell a good selection of several different types of goods such as audio video equipment, plumbing fixtures, and clothing. But they are not department stores in the traditional sense because they only have three or four specialized departments. A better analogy is a group of unrelated boutiques and shops in a small shopping center. Many departments in department stores are run directly or are franchised by the distributors of foreign brands. Renovation has also been a key to the improvement of department stores. New Stores: Something to look for in the future is the re-opening of the Frunzenskiy department store. The Frunzenskiy department store suspiciously burned several years ago and was never re-opened. Stockmann, which has a chain of department stores in Finland, has begun plans to open its first full scale department store in Russia in St. Petersburg. They plan to offer the same products and services available in their Finnish locations.
Better Department Stores: Some of the better department stores are Gostinyy Dvor, Passazh (The Passage), DLT, Tsentr Firmennoy Torgovli and the Moskovskiy Univermag. Gostinyy Dvor, forever under renovation, has departments spread out over 2 floors and is divided into four "lines" named according to the streets they face: Sadovaya, Perinnaya, Lomonosovskaya and Nevskaya (which is still under renovation). It includes several foreign shops worth taking a look at and a large grocery store. Passazh which means "Passage" is a bit smaller than its neighbor across the street but still holds its own when it comes to selection from Russian and foreign products. In addition to the large grocery store in the basement, there is a good selection of shoes, gifts/souvenirs and even oriental rugs. DLT has a good selection of children's goods with probably the largest selection of toys in the city. There's also plenty for adults, including an Italian shoe boutique.
