Well-known western credit cards have been used in the Russian market for for over 30 years, Diners Club and American Express since 1969; Visa International and Eurocard/Mastercard since 1974.

TYP Note: Credit card fraud is increasing and you will often be asked to show your passport when using one.
The most widely accepted cards are still American Express, Visa, and Europay (Eurocard/Mastercard).
Presently credit cards are commonly accepted form of payment in most major hotels, airlines, restaurants and upscale shops. However, most smaller shops and establishements do not accept credit cards.

Cash from your American Express Card: To get cash through American Express, it is necessary to call the American Express office at 329-60-60 or go to their office in Grand Hotel Europe. See AMERICAN EXPRESS OFFICE.

Cash Advances from the Bank: You can now get cash advances (in dollars) on your credit card in many places at a rate of 1% to 5% of amount received plus fee charged by the credit card company. You will need your passport for cash advances. Here are a few banks that give cash advances. Look for the Visa and Master Card sign on the bank currency exchange office.
