BAKERIES (37 listings) File Created: 28-Jan-03
Russian bread is excellent and inexpensive. Baked without preservatives, it is often delivered fresh to the bakery several times a day. You can get fresh and some-times even hot bread (goryachiy khleb) every day. Bread and rolls are still not packaged, so take along plastic bags to the local bakery. Russians often ask if the bread is "Svezhiy" fresh and/or myagkiy soft. Sometimes a fork is provided to test the bread or the clerk might even advise you as to the best bread that day.
Some bakeries have small cafeterias, where you can buy coffee and pastries. In our listings these shops are marked by a cup. Bakeries with hot bread are denoted by a loaf of bread.
A "bulochnaya" generally has fresh bread, rolls, and occasionally cakes and pastries, while a Konditerskaya has pastries, cakes, cookies, candy and often coffee, cognac and in some even ice cream, but usually no bread. A few of the better "bulochnaya" and "Konditerskaya" are listed below.
