How To Get an Address.
Use the Mosgorspravka "Address Bureau" listed below for help in finding telephone numbers and addresses. This bureau was traditionally run by the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD). Unfortunately, many new numbers and firms are not listed. Tell them a person's full name (last name, surname, patronymic), date and place of birth and they will give you a Moscow address within one hour if the person is "registered in Moscow". If the address is outside of Moscow you will get the information in 2-2.5 hrs. Information is available only in Russian.
Information rates:
1. Business (plants, factories, ministries, organizations) address, telephone and ways to get there - 15 Rbls
2. Residential addresses:
in Moscow - 15 Rbls
outside Moscow - 15 Rbls
no address found - 15 Rbls
3. Information on lost documents - 30 Rbls
How To Find an Address Location:
It is recommended that you call the organization or host to get detailed directions on how to find their door (literally). House numbers are few and far between, difficult to see and refer to the entire building, not the number of the entrance. Ask them if they have a sign or some other way of finding the front door. Even better, get written instructions in English and Russian.
As a rule, numbers for streets radiating from the Kremlin get higher the further away from the center. Even numbers are usually on the right and odd numbers on the left. For streets running concentric around Moscow's center, street numbers increase like looking at a clock, with the even numbers on the side of the street nearest to the center.
"Metro stations" are often used as a "point of reference". Use the Metro stations on the back of The Traveller's Yellow Pages City Map to help find the street.
Finding the Actual Door:
The street number given in the text is the number for the whole building, called a "house" (dom, дом). A "house" can cover a whole city block and may include several different separate buildings called "korpus" and may have several entrances (podyezd, подъезд). These entrances may be located not only on the street but also in courtyards (especially for apartments).
Thus, an address in Russian might read: дом 2, корпус 3, подъезд 3, квартира 22 which means: house 2, bldg. 3, entrance 3, apt. 22. The street number of the house can also have a letter, for example дом 51г. In such cases, we give a transliteration - house 51g.
Offices are referred to in different ways depending on where they are located. In office buildings an office can be referred to as an apartment, (kvartira, квартира) or office (ofis, офис). In hotels and business centers, they are referred to as "room" (komnata, комната).
.
Getting In May Require Permits:
In some cases you must present or leave your passport at the entrance to enter a building. This can be the case with some banks and companies where security is a consideration. In addition, ask if you or your colleagues will need a permit (propusk) to get into the building.
