History:The first museum-like institutions which
stored relics and rarities were vestries in churches, monasteries and the Armory which already in the 17c. had a special exposition hall. In 1776 Moscow City University (MCU) opened a Study-room of Natural History, which was then transformed into The MCU Zoological Museum. This is the starting point of the history of Moscow Museums. The Armory became an Art Museum only in the 19c.
The first museums that were built to serve the task were the Politechnical Museum and the Museum of History.
Palaces: Many beautiful, old palaces and grand houses of nobility and merchants are used as concert halls, "Houses of Culture", institutes and government offices. Often special events are held there.
Work Hours: Most museums close one day each week. A few still close for a "sanitary day" the last Wednesday or Thursday or Friday of each Month (indicated by "last"). These hours and days can change, especially in fall and winter, so check.
